The Return To Food Is A Return To Love

The Return to Food is a Return to Love

Return to FoodWhen I first started teaching cooking classes in 1993 my school became a laboratory for observing human behaviour and health. An unexpected gift in teaching was that I learned as much from my students experiencing what I was teaching as they learned from me, perhaps more. I started to notice that when I used organic produce, they loved the food more and it took less to satiate them. I learned that when foods were in their natural state the body tended to self regulate eating them and when they were processed the body would eat more to compensate for nutrient losses. I also learned that the happier, more engaged and present we all were in the classes, the less important the food was.

My biggest lesson was that the social context in which we eat is as or if not more powerful than what we eat. When we are filled up with connection and love, it takes very little food to nourish us and when we are empty and lonely there does not seem to be enough nourishing food in the world to make us feel satisfied. We go to the cupboards, the fridge or a special hiding spot for our indulgence foods and look for the food that will make us feel that feeling that can take us away from an uncomfortable thought and emotion but that food no matter how nourishing or addictive cannot and so we try something else when the real solution is to follow the thought and the emotions they create to feel it and heal it.

The tools I’ve used with clients for over 20 years now and in my own journey is to learn to feel and through that heal. To return to the perfection and the magnificence you are as a creation of nature is about reminding yourself of this each day. This can be done through journalling, through looking in the mirror each day directly into your eyes the window to your soul and start to tell yourself you love yourself. It can be done through meditation or a walk in nature.

When we tap into the power of food that really is nourishing, share this with others and start a practice of gratitude for our body, the food the planet produces and literally how magnificent we are as a being, amazing things will start to happen. The Return to Food is simply a return to love of your body, those around you, the love of real food and this incredible planet.
